Press Release from Southern Growers - Montgomery, Alabama.NEW CONFEDERATE ROSE NOW AVAILABLE (Patent Applied For)
The hibiscus was discovered by Mrs. Alma Bodiford, an avid Master Gardener from Luverne, AL. As friends gave her cuttings of plants, she would root them in the fall and plant them in her garden. In the spring of 1997, Mrs. Alma didn’t feel like planting each cutting in individual holes, so she bunched them together and put them in one large hole. When these cuttings reached maturity in the fall, Mrs. Alma discovered one of the cuttings had mutated, bearing a flower which had five blooms in each of its large buds. The new variety named ' Alma's Star' is registered with the American Hibiscus Society and a patent has been applied for. It is currently being marketed to independent garden centers and growers in the southern U.S. exclusively by Southern Growers as part of the Southern Favorites™ collection. Bill Cook, VP of Southern Growers, stated that this is one of the most unique flowering hibiscus that has ever been discovered. It has large rose pink flowers
that consists of five double blooms bundled into one large bud. “It has been
under our research and review for several years and we feel it will be a great
addition to anyone's garden or landscape.” said Mr. Cook. Alma's Star is
adaptive to most soils and a very vigorous grower. It is rated for zones 7-9 and
can be grown in more northern zones if protected from severe cold. In the South
, it blooms magnificently from late summer until first hard freeze , going
dormant in Winter and exploding with new growth each spring. Garden centers will
have excellent P.O.P. signage and posters available to help merchandise this new
plant. To purchase Alma’s Star Confederate Rose contact your local garden
